Pueblo and Pikes Peak

After leaving the Colorado Springs area we moved to the Pueblo KOA.

(Note: there is a low tunnel here if you come from a particular direction so be aware of that – contact the KOA for alternate directions). The temperatures have been going up but once here in Pueblo we just knew our cool weather experiences were over for the summer. Not a bad KOA. There’s a pool here partially under a tree so it felt really refreshing. Also on the weekend you can order breakfast and they have an ice cream social when you can purchase a shake. You can also order a pizza.

We went to the Pueblo Riverwalk but there wasn’t much there. It has potential to be pretty nice if they add some shopping. There’s mostly restaurants there. We went to Brues Alehouse and had a flight. I’m not much of a beer drinker but I did like 2 of them A Nitro Manthers and even better was the Storyteller Stout.

On a Friday we went to Pikes Peak. We got there by about 9:30 am and had no trouble parking. I think it was about $15 each to enter. In 2019 they were working on the Cog Railway so it was not running and they were building a new Visitor Center at the top and since the construction equipment took up so much room there was a lot less parking up there so they suggested you park part way up and ride a shuttle. The old visitor center is still open.

We chose to stop at the first parking area (there’s at least 3) and take the shuttle to spare the truck’s brakes on the ride down. Plus we got a bonus of hearing information about the sights on the way up from the driver who was a local. The temperature at the top was about 55 degrees. We had to have donuts which are a “thing” at Pikes Peak. They use a special recipe because of the 14,115 ft altitude. Truth be told they seem to be just a regular cake donut but it doesn’t take much of an excuse to get me to eat a donut. We took our pictures and left (I started getting a headache up there). We took the shuttle back to the truck and went down to a picnic area and ate the sandwiches we brought.

After coming back down from the Peak we decided to stop in Manitou Springs before going back to the KOA. Such a cute town. We stopped for a drink at the Manitou brewery and saw a sticker from the Dunedin Brewery (my home town) which was pretty amazing.

The next day I declared thrift shop day. There’s not much to do in Pueblo so we went thrift shopping. It was fun. I found a pair of shorts and jeans and a top. Then we went to Shamrock Brewery and split an order of scotch eggs which were very good. We also split fish and chips which weren’t that good because it wasn’t very crunchy.

We went back home to the trailer thinking we’d have dinner and a shake at the social at KOA but instead a storm blew in. It got VERY windy and there was a LOT of lightening and rain and then hail and then the power went out. So we went out to Cracker Barrel for dinner and by 10:30 pm the power came back on.

Next we move to Raton Pass New Mexico.

Summary: We stayed at the Pueblo KOA and from there visited downtown Pueblo one day, and another day drove to Pikes Peak and on the way back visited Manitou Springs.
