Telluride - My Dream Retreat from HEAT!

Updated: Sep 2, 2019

Friday we moved to Priest Gulch campground (has a Dolores address) and we loved it. A river runs right through it (I think its the Dolores River) strong flow. Once in the park (you drive down a short hill) we crossed over the river on a narrow bridge. We didn't get a spot on the river but it was the next row over. We were lucky to get a space - they only had 1 or two left. They have swinging chairs/benches you can sit in and listen to the river.

They provide wood so you can build a fire. The WIFI didn't work well in the trailer but it was just a short walk to the gazebo (enclosed building) where it worked great. The bathroom/showers and laundry were good too. This has been my favorite park we ever stayed at. It was in he middle of June and I was wearing sweatshirts. This was also the first park where we were escorted to our site. I really like that. They help you park and make sure nothing gets damaged.

The Dolores River Runs Thru Priest Gulch

On the way to Priest Gulch we saw the now famous boulder on 145 that fell from above. They blasted the smaller part of it and removed the debris. They will leave the larger piece as sort of a landmark or memorial.

This is home base for our Telluride visits.

Telluride

We went into Telluride (high of 63!). It is at around 10,000 ft elevation. On the way we saw elk and I saw a couple of ? weasels or Martens, or something like that. In Telluride we rode the Gondola (its free). Great views. Then we went to Smugglers Brewery. They didn't have any porters at that time (seasonal) but they did have a ginger beer. We ate burgers while it rained outside. Stopped by the time we left - good timing.

Elk

We went back to Telluride the next day. Wanted to see Bridal Veil falls. You just drive thru ton and when the road ends you see the falls up by the power plant. There are also some falls on the other side.

Then we walked the River Trail to get to the Valley Floor Trail. I like that last one because you see elk out in the fields.

We tried the Telluride Brewery, not real impressive, and then went to Clarks grocery & got supplies to make smores. We went home and made a fire and smores. Yum. Our first fire of the trip and first smores.

Our first fire!

We stayed home the next day and did research for our next move.

Next up - we visit Ouray.
